Along with three other players, you’ll battle through various Deep South locations (including New Orleans), blasting scads of aggressive foes while watching each other’s backs and trying to escape to safety.What makes the game so special, besides its complete focus on team play, is the AI Director 2.0—a feature that dynamically changes the game experience based on your progress, whether it’s the number of enemies, the route ahead, or even the in-game weather. To make things all the more frantic and chaotic, of course. ($50) might star Amanda Ripley, daughter of original film series heroine Ellen, but it smartly follows the horror-centric mold of the first flick rather than the action-centric sequel. It’s just you and a single, super-smart alien on an abandoned space station, and you’ll have to survive on your own using only gadgets and stealth movements.It’s an incredibly intense experience, especially when you’re silently hiding in a locker, or when the brainy alien suddenly pops out of a vent. Alien: Isolation has atmosphere for days, but this Collection also has bonuses: you also get a couple of extra, standalone missions featuring the original film’s cast, and letting you play as Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) herself.
While the TV show might be shedding fans with its gruesome twists, Telltale’s ($25, Season One) game series has been widely praised from the start, with two seasons, a spinoff mini-series, and now a third full season beginning in November. If you haven’t played this choose-your-own-adventure amidst the zombie uprising, now’s the time to get started.The five-episode first season puts you in the shoes of Lee, a man with a mysterious past who teams up with a young girl, Clementine—and every decision and dialogue choice you make has consequences that echo throughout these five episodes and into the later seasons.
It’s pretty grim, heartbreaking stuff, but also very tense and startling at times. Haven’t heard of this cheap, lo-fi indie game? You’re probably not alone.
It has a relatively low profile and was just released on Mac this summer, but the people who love it absolutely love it: the game has “Overwhelmingly Positive” reviews on Steam. That’s because it’s one of the wildest first-person shooters ever released, and it’s pretty horrifying to boot.($5) is built in the mold of classic shooters like Doom, but instead of sending you along through hallways, you’re dropped into a darkened arena filled with huge, glowing threats. Floating skulls and massive beasts emerge from the shadows, and you’ll have to fire your magic daggers at a constant clip to stay alive.

Are you afraid of the dark? Speaking of Doom we still don’t have this year’s awesome reboot on Mac, but at least you can grab the previous entry for a song. ($5) put a glossy coat of paint on the classic corridor shooter, amplifying the intensity while adding more of a horrifying edge to the monsters you encounter along the way.Doom 3 finds you exploring an experimental research facility on Mars that has accidentally opened a portal to Hell—and unsurprisingly, Hell’s inhabitants aren’t too happy to see you.
Expect long walks through darkened rooms filled with grotesque monsters, along with plenty of blasting, plus there’s a Resurrection of Evil expansion available if the main game isn’t enough. Whether you play on Mac or iOS, Playdead’s ($10) is a game that can’t be missed. And it’s absolutely haunting: you’ll command a young boy as he wanders through the shadowy forest, encountering strange beasts and surprising traps as you solve puzzles and try to unravel exactly what’s happening.
Without dialogue or instruction, it’s never 100 percent clear.But you’ll pick up the fundamentals right away, and then Limbo should have you within its grasp. Whether you’re trying to fend off a towering spider, avoid a spiky demise, or overcome a perplexing obstacle, this atmospheric adventure delights.
And the ultimate payoff is pretty great, too. It’s only a couple of hours long, but it’s brilliant from start to finish. Slender Man is one weird, weird Internet artifact: a creation of the Something Awful forums that somehow became a cult sensation, generating all sorts of memes, fan media, and even some horrifying real-life violence. That last bit is terrible, terrible stuff, but if you want to be scared stupid without anyone actually being hurt, play ($10).Primarily set within a forest, you’ll explore with a flashlight and try to figure out where your friends have gone and then you’ll stumble upon the titular antagonist, a supernaturally tall and long-limbed monster without a face. And then the screen will get fuzzy. And then you should definitely turn around and run if you want to survive. When the zombies rise and begin roaming the Earth, most games would have you shoot your way out of it.
($25) has some of that, sure, but it also throws in more than a dash of Minecraft, letting you craft weapons and armor, build up defenses, mine and scavenge for resources, and work together to survive for as long as you can against the undead.Even with more of a strategic sandbox edge, 7 Days to Die is plenty intense whether played in single-player or multiplayer modes. For all of the exploration, structure-building, and menu navigating, there’s plenty of brain-blasting and head-bashing to find here. Even six years later, ($20) is still considered a master class in designing a totally twisted and completely unnerving game experience.

However, there are threats abound—both inside the location and within your mind, as well.Daniel is prone to hallucinations, and how can you trust your ability to evade enemies if you can’t even believe what you’re seeing?
It’s a constant struggle that makes Amnesia truly one of the most grueling survival horror adventures around, plus there’s an expansion pack to endure, not to mention a grisly standalone sequel called Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Obsession can drive one to madness, and that’s exactly the premise of ($20).

Much like Alien: Isolation, ($20) isn’t designed to make you feel like an all-powerful warrior. In fact, you’re a journalist—and no, the job description doesn’t come with firearm proficiency. As an investigative reporter, you’ll explore the Mount Massive Asylum, where rumors claim that horrific experiments are taking place. Yes, the rumors are clearly true.You’ll find that out quickly when being pursued by some freakish, ultra-fast beast, and you’ll need to run or hide to evade their capture (and your demise). Thankfully, you have a night-vision camcorder to help you explore the darkened hallways and gruesome operating rooms, but that won’t help you much when you’re trying to sprint to safety.
Ah, to view the world from the eyes of a precious two-year-old. It sounds well, it actually sounds kind of terrifying, no?
And this isn’t your average single family home in ($15), or at least it doesn’t appear that way from your undeveloped mind. Woken by an unknown noise, you’ll wander the space seeking comfort and light.The environments can look twisted and strange, and the creatures—or monsters—are unknown and terrifying, but at least you have a sentient stuffed bear to reassure you and light up when pressed. Still, there’s an unsettling backstory here about a seeming dispute between the mother and father, and Among the Sleep has been lauded for its emotional gut-punch of a narrative. Many of the games of this list have realistic (or semi-realistic) graphics and may take place from a first-person perspective to boost the immersion, but you don’t have to see a game world from your character’s eyes to be spooked by it. That’s clearly the case with ($15), a much-loved indie game that has an old-school, 16-bit-esque pixel graphics look to it.Thankfully, that doesn’t neuter the tension or freaky atmosphere at all. You’re the titular hero: a rare survivor trying to escape a disease-ridden city, only you’re dealing with some vivid hallucinations amidst the aggressive mutants. It’s a blend of adventure, action, and simulation games, with a bit of virtual pet management tossed in, and your choices along the way help shape the conclusion.
($30) hails from Frictional Games, the same studio behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent, but it’s thankfully not as exhausting of a horror grind. That’s not to say that it lacks tension and atmosphere, however: with a sci-fi storyline and setting, it’s one of the most memorable Mac games released in recent memory.The first-person adventure takes place on an underwater lab called PATHOS-II, where the robots have developed personalities and think they’re alive. Not creepy enough for you? Well, wait and see what happens when the lights are out. Our sister site PCWorld dropped on SOMA last year, claiming, “SOMA does BioShock better than BioShock ever did BioShock.”. Train conductors probably deal with a lot of day-to-day stress, but this is next-level: ($15) puts you in the job as you try to guide a train of survivors through the aftermath of an apocalypse.
As you might expect, that’s not the easiest task around.You’ll need to keep the train in working condition as you travel from station to station, and each destination is filled with infected attackers—but resources are scarce, so blasting a path through them isn’t your smartest approach. Even with a pixel-art aesthetic, it’s filled with tension and startling violence, and it seems like the kind of game you can play multiple times over with varying experiences.

But don't worry! We do reach a destination, and the game continues to be interesting.The storyline is also very good.
The writers made only one mistake: they brought back a character from another Mystery Trackers game, Nightsville Horror, as someone who had 'special abilities,' when in fact that was the only major character in that game who did NOT have any such abilities! But that was just one mistake, and a minor one at that.The graphics are very good also, and the music is okay. The HOPs are fun, and the puzzles are mostly pretty easy too. I say 'mostly' because there.is. one puzzle - or rather one part of a multi-part puzzle - that can be rather tricky. But don't let that daunt you. If you get too frustrated, you can always refer to the Strategy Guide or a Big Fish walkthrough to solve it, of course.Finally, the Bonus Chapter is also quite interesting and a logical extension of the main game.

The graphics, music, sounds, game play, voice overs all that good stuff, was great!I was able to get all of the puzzle pieces that you need to collect, the morphs and the achievements.
All very fun to find and collect! The giude was very helpful.The only thing that disappointed me was the 'BONUS ROOM or the SECRET Room'.I expected to have something new or different but once you unlock it, it is nothing but Hidden object scenes and mini games which you have already played throughout the game. We have #11 eleven in this series, and yes, I have them all. Excellent graphics, very clear. Colors are true and nice. Game play is excellent, no problems during the demo and it fit my large screen quite nicely. The voice overs are well done, age and character appropriate, and actually show emotion. Animation is exceptional, e.g.
Eye and mouth movements, shaking with fear, nervous, etc. Music is mostly soothing until something is about to happen, or is happening that might raise your blood pressure a bit. Nope, saw no snakes and nothing jumped out at me. Sound FX are well done and constant, so there is no lag with dead quiet during play. Oh, yes, we still have our helper, Elf. He isn't used a lot and is very quiet, but also quite helpful when needed.HOPs are silhouettes and lists. Scenes are very clear and clean and items are not difficult to find.
I did not see where you could switch to something else, but you really wouldn't need to. Puzzles are not difficult, but a few do take some time and thought to complete. You do play a match 3 game each time you use the 'unlock' tool. The items used are almost too busy, but doable.
Hint system is very helpful and it does transport to longer locations. You have a jump map, but I seldom use it, since we have the transport.
SG is the standard set up and does show you where collectibles can be found, in case you missed one.Really liked the collectibles. We have to find 27 morphing items that aren't too difficult, but you do have to look for them. We also have 12 magnets that are monuments/historical places that also give you a description of each location.
These are not as easy to spot as you may think and some are well hidden. We have a puzzle that needs to be put together as well, so we are looking for 32 puzzle pieces. These can be anywhere, so be on the lookout. There is some challenge to these collectibles for a change.As I said, I review on the play and not the story.however, this story is interesting and keeps you constantly on the move and doing something. Yes, you back-track, but for a purpose and not just to pick up some little thing here or there. This game drew me in from the beginning and has not let me down. There is a lot of action in this game and no lag in story or play, so you don't get bored.
I rarely give any game 5 stars, unless it is exceptional. I do believe this one qualifies. I think all levels of players will find this one interesting, fun and a bit challenging in places. I love this series and I have been waiting for this one since I beta tested it back in April, so yes, I am adding this one to my collection.As always, try it for yourself and see what you think. When I did the Beta Test I knew something wonderful awaited.The richness of the music, the clarity and beauty in the graphics, the flawless gameplay and extraordinary fun and mystery of the story took my breath away. Mystery Trackers: Train to Hellswich is a surefire contender for Game of the Year!This is a busy game, with lots of collectibles and morphing objects to find, items to assemble and repair, and puzzles to solve. The HOPs are lists of items and silhouettes, interactive and just challenging enough in my books.The voice acting is superb and the cutscenes are very entertaining and move the plot forward effortlessly. In my opinion, this is the best game I have seen so far this year and I highly recommend you give it a try.Two thumbs way up! We are off for a hard-earned vacation after our last case in Paxton Creek but it quickly turns into anything but a change of pace. Yes, we are traveling with our side-kick Elf because a Mystery Trackers game just wouldn’t be the same without him and his antics.
Many gamers do not care for pet helpers but being the “mom” of Elf’s female twin, I happen to love having him tag along in a Mystery Trackers game. The graphics are excellent and what we would expect from this top game developer. There are four modes of gameplay with the Detective Mode being customizable. Your tools include Elf who will help with various tasks, an integrated map and a special hacking device that allows you to open locks.After your last case you are ready for a vacation and some well-deserved time off. Alas, trouble just seems to find you no matter where you might be and this time it is on a train to London. Not long after boarding, your train is attacked by some evil creatures who seem to be searching for a girl who is on the train. It turns out that you are running into one problem after another as you try to follow the creatures who have finally found their target.
Just in the nick of time you manage to follow them as the car is detached from the rest of the train. Who are these creatures and what do they want with the girl, and possibly others that have been kidnapped? Are they from another world? Find the answers as you an Elf follow the trail and solve this new mystery.The HOPS include a good variety including silhouette and list types that are found during the demo. I enjoy the HOP scenes created by this developer and always enjoy their artwork. Somehow one of their games wouldn’t be the same if the first HOP didn’t involve a suitcase – lol. The puzzles are great but most will find them easy.
I did struggle with the Rube-Goldberg puzzle at the end of the demo even though only one of the levels was tricky.Extras in the CE version of the game include puzzle pieces to complete a jigsaw, morphing objects, achievements can be earned as you play the game, bonus game, strategy guide, concept art, wallpapers, music and a secret room.Mystery Trackers has always been a favorite series and with eleven games there have been some that were excellent but in recent years there have been a few games that have not lived up to the excellence of those early games such as The Void and Raincliff. The early part of this game seems bogged down with idiotic time-filler tasks before the action really picks up. When it does, the Train to Hellswich seems like an exciting and interesting game.
I am not sure about our hooded villains, maybe they are from another world or maybe they are local nasties but whoever they might be, it will certainly be fun to put a stop to their venture and rescue the kidnapped girl. I think this game lives up to some of the early games as far as entertainment value and for me it was a definite. Even though I love the game, please try the demo and see it you will enjoy it as well. As you amble through the train you see them lurking about a train destroying all in their path and kidnapping a girl for her pyrokinetic abilities.
I feel the game is significantly better than the others in the series.This is an action-packed game with phenomenal graphics, decent HOP scenes and exciting puzzles. The HOP scenes and puzzles are very creative and well-done. There are more puzzles than HOP scenes. There are also quite a few extras as well including 21 achievements. You also collect 12 magnets, 27 morphing objects, and 32 jigsaw puzzle pieces (probably to play a jigsaw puzzle at the end of the game).
You get the map at the beginning of the game and there is a strategy guide, 8 wallpapers, 8 concept art scenes, music and a secret room.Elf (dressed in his own summery Hawaiian shirt) is back; however, he has been removed from his “top dog” status on the sidebar of the inventory and been demoted to the “baggage” section. He has been placed in the inventory itself, so he is less annoying.
It appears he is also used less in this game (only 3 times) – at least from the demo. He performs his actions quickly as well.ARE YOU A HANDYMAN? Most of the puzzles and actions in the demo require some handyman skills. You will be “screwing around” and sawing your way through this game with a host of tools, (saws – electrical and manual, screwdrivers – real and innovated, lug wrenches, nail pullers and wire clippers).
You will also correctly learn that electrical tape, NOT duct tape is the proper tape to splice a wire – although you should probably turn off the electricity first!PUZZLES: I LOVE the puzzles in this game. There is another “helper” in the game – an electronic lock opener. You will use this to open any lock. Upon using the device, you will activate a Match-3 game with designations of “Casual” and “Hard” settings.
The only difference in the settings (from the beta) is the amount of items which you must locate. Very cleverly designed.There is also a SUPER PUZZLE! The Rube Goldberg puzzle in this game has five different puzzles, one of which is difficult. There is a very easy matching puzzle, an easy switch puzzle, a logic puzzle, and two sliding rings puzzles – one of which is difficult!
All can be individually skipped as well.Other puzzles include a maze puzzle which requires you to create a path without retracing your steps, a type of assembly puzzle in which you move two dials to recreate a pictured train, a type of gear puzzle in which you must match up symbols on intersecting gears, and a difficult logic puzzle in which has you move 3 to 4 spaces at a time to light up only three symbols on the lock. If you use logic it is not too difficult.HOP SCENES: The HOP scenes are also well constructed. There are two silhouette scenes and one list of items. Lock code logic puzzle. Move a dial so that you light only three symbols on a round dial. The spaces which your cursor will move are 3 and 4 clockwise. Rating: 4(4) Switch puzzle. Switch tiles along a circle to create a design. Rating: 2(5) Logic puzzle. Within two disks, rotate the disks to identify which type of train matches up with each color.
Then, looking at the side of the screen, swap the trains to place them with their correct color.
