It’s unfortunate but inevitable that the very personal forces that fueled the Beatles’ incredible music should also split the band apart.Following the death of Beatles manager Brian Epstein in 1967 and a disastrous stint on the Maharishi’s Indian compound in early 1968, the Beatles entered a rocky descent into breakup. Their first album post-Maharishi– The Beatles, AKA “The White Album”–was jam-packed with colorful, delightfully idiosyncratic songs hatched primarily in India and lacking the overarching sounds that tended to flavor Beatles albums before. But this independnece of sound mirrored the bandmates’ increasing interpersonal distance and willfullness toward the band’s direction. Nearly all tracks on The Beatles lack at least one of the four members, and many have only two, if even that. The band would rally on for another couple of albums’ worth of material, but the Beatles were fast becoming four guys unhappily stuck together.At any rate, here are The Kinfauns Demos. Named for and recorded at George’s house Kinfauns shortly after arriving back from India, the tracks are demos (or “routine” tracks), and consequently are rough but still quite charming. Several can also be found on Anthology 3, but the rest have not been released officially–all are collected here. Two tracks, “Sour Milk Sea” and “Circles”, have never been officially released. You’ll recognize “Child Of Nature” as “Jealous Guy” in its infant form.

Some tracks would appear on The Beatles, some later on Abbey Road. Some would drop off the Beatles radar totally, appearing much later on solo albums.This is a drop in the bucket of Beatles bootlegs available, but The Kinfauns Demos are sketchy acoustic tracks that have held up very well and make for a great album all their own.
