Even using it with hanzi and not pinyin proved near useless.It might help for individual words but there is no sentence structure as you are supposed to just pick it up as you go which is bull considering the usage of things like the multiples 'de'.EDIT: My Chinese language school uses New Practical Chinese Reader. You can buy the main text book and the work book and use them solo. It won't substitute for a class but neither will any app.

I found Rosetta kind of boring, and dropped it after one week. Voice recognition was buggy too. I'm glad I didn't buy it.I've never tried ChinesePod, so can't talk about it. But I've tried Pimsleur and it was even more boring. They were okay to listen on long train journeys to help me sleep, but I don't think any of these is worth the money. This is just my opinion, I know people who have enjoyed Rosetta, but it just didn't work for me.Here are my suggestions:This is my favorite site ever. This is a nice starting point:I've recently finished the beginner's course and began with intermediate. You can check some free lessons on. It has a lot of material, well scheduled courses, clear explanations, street interviews. They are now releasing a new course on characters, which seems very interesting. I feel Yangyang is like a tutor. It won't teach you a language.Pimsleur and/or the Michel Thomas CDs are decent ways to start.Chinesepod is great but a little overwhelming in terms of what content to study when. The content is great but there isn't much structure. Whether that is a problem for you or not depends. They have a trial and there are also a number of their earlier lessons available online in the public domain. If you prefer a more structured 'lesson' approach then Yoyo is probably better.Here's another resource list:Also wanted to throw in this memrise course (which I made):It's based on the Language hacking template that Memrise publishes and it is a good way to get some basic phrases. I like their podcasts way more. Also, I have let a Chinese friend listen to one of the podcasts of ChinesePod and she has advised me from not using them. She said they are not really speaking Standard Chinese (putonghua) and since then I haven't touched them again.I agree with many of the suggestions here.Pleco is a great dictionary in case you are using an Android/iOS smartphone.The free courses on CCTV are also nice. See if you like them.Memrise is a nice tool to practice vocabulary, though depending on your preference you might prefer flashcard software like Anki.

I personally use Pleco with its paid flashcard addon.Once you have reached a good enough level to practice writing, you can start doing so on websites like govoluble.com. You can register for free and have your submissions be corrected by native speakers. It also supports recordings to improve your pronunciation and you can take part in language exchange with native speakers.

My son uses this regularlyWe received this program about two or three weeks ago. I purchased it for my 15-year-old son.

I cannot speak for the program itself, since my son is the one using it, but I can say that my son has used it every day religiously for thirty minutes. I purchased a program previously that said it was comparable to Rosetta Stone. He dislike that program and never used it. The Rosetta Stone purchase is engaging enough to encourage a fifteen-year-old to use it every single day for at least the past two to three weeks. I am extremely pleased with the purchase.
